Search Wirecutter For: Search Reviews for the real world Browse Close. Browse Close. We’ve researched hundreds of laptop and MacBook sleeves and cases over the past few years, and tested a few dozen promising candidates, to see which ones offer the best fit, protection, and build quality. We know that personal style plays a large role in choosing the best laptop sleeve or case, so we don’t have a single best pick for most people.

Instead, we’ve highlighted a few of our favorites, from to, as well as. For accessories, style matters, but when you’re looking for a protective laptop sleeve or case, style shouldn’t come at the cost of protecting your laptop from grit and light scuffs. That’s why we considered (with ) only those sleeves that protected all four sides and corners of a computer when closed.

We couldn’t try every size of every sleeve, or every sleeve with every computer model, but we did test each with a 2015 13-inch MacBook Pro, a 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro, and a 2013 Chromebook Pixel, which represent fairly common laptop sizes—though many of our picks are also available in other sizes. No matter your needs, there’s a sleeve that’s right for you. Photos: Michael Hession In our tests, we inserted each computer into each sleeve (one at a time, of course), feeling to see how well each fit. We also evaluated features such as the ease with which the zippers glided, and we sprayed with water the sleeves that promised some degree of water protection to see how well they kept moisture out. Once we identified some favorites, we tested those picks in real-world scenarios, traveling to places such as coffee shops and coworking spaces to see just how well the sleeves fit into our everyday routines.

We’ll be updating this guide with long-term test notes as we spend extended time with each sleeve. If you have a personal favorite that you’d like to see us test, let us know in the comments, and we’ll check it out. Use the AmazonBasics Laptop Sleeve in your bag, and it will help prevent damage from minor bumps and everyday life. Photo: Michael Hession Why it’s great The is the perfect expression of this basic yet effective sleeve type: It completely envelops your computer with padding on all sides to guard against grit, scratches, and slight bumps, and it offers a well-tailored fit plus a clean look. In our tests, both the older MacBook Pro and the Chromebook Pixel fit well inside the AmazonBasics case without too much extra space to slide around. Because the 2017 MacBook Pro is a little smaller than the 2015 model, the sleeve fit the newer Mac a little more loosely, but still with less slack than had. Furthermore, the zipper of the AmazonBasics slides just as smoothly as the Incase’s, although the Incase has two zippers, while the AmazonBasics has only one.

While the overall material quality of the Incase sleeve is just a hair nicer, we prefer the AmazonBasics sleeve because it’s similarly great overall at less than half the price. Agrees, writing in his review that the AmazonBasics sleeve feels “far more premium” than the price would suggest.

Another point in favor of the AmazonBasics is that it comes in a wider selection of sizes, from 7 inches for tablets to 17.3 inches for giant laptops. The more-popular 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch sizes come in multiple colors, while the other sizes are available in only black. And all sizes of the AmazonBasics sleeve are inexpensive: None sells for much more than $10. For the same price, the (which is so similar to the AmazonBasics that we wouldn’t be surprised to learn it comes from the same factory) is available in only 11.6- and 13.3-inch sizes, plus a 10-inch version for tablets, and that company has a bare-bones website with unresponsive customer support. Sizes 7-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch, 11.6-inch, 13.3-inch, 14-inch, 15-inch, 17.3-inch Flaws but not dealbreakers Neoprene sleeves offer limited protection against damage. They keep dust and debris out, make sure nothing in your bag scratches your computer, and prevent dings from minor bumps, but you shouldn’t expect much more than that. Some Amazon reviewers complain about the AmazonBasics Laptop Sleeve not fitting their device properly.

Of course, no one sleeve will be the perfect fit for every machine, but some customers say the 14-inch sleeve is a better fit for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display than the 15-inch sleeve, while others say it fits perfectly. Thankfully, Amazon is good with returns if the sleeve you order ends up not fitting right. Also consider. If you like the general size and shape of this kind of sleeve but take protection more seriously, (available in sizes for the latest 15-inch MacBook Pro, the older 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, the latest 13-inch MacBook Pro, the older 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, the 13-inch MacBook Air, and the 12-inch MacBook) is a great choice. This handsome sleeve fits MacBooks like a glove and is slimmer than pretty much anything we tested. The shock-absorbing rubber bumper helps prevent damage from drops better than neoprene would, and the magnetic closure offers an elegant way to keep your computer free of dust without having to deal with a zipper.

A Wirecutter editor testing this case found removing her 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro to be difficult, saying, “It’s so tight, and there’s no way to get a grip on the computer to pull it out.” This doesn’t seem to be a common complaint, and it’s not one that I had, though we’ve seen very few professional or customer reviews of this case. In a review of the version for the 12-inch MacBook, cites the cleverness of the magnets that hold the flap shut, noting that he “never felt concerned that the MacBook would slide out and the notebook never took any tumbles.” Unfortunately, PC and Chromebook owners are out of luck on this one: While Incase offers versions of the Icon Sleeve for all current Macs, the sleeves are so tightly tailored that other computers won’t fit.

Who it’s for Hard-shell laptop cases are made for people who bring their computers into precarious situations—hiking trips, bike commutes, or travels in a rainy climate—or who just want the peace of mind of extra protection. We think most people, in most situations, can safely get away with tossing a more basic sleeve in a backpack, but when there’s a real possibility of physical or liquid damage, we would switch to a water-resistant, hard-shell case. Why it’s great Thule is well-known for its tough and reliable car-roof carriers, and we’ve found that its protective luggage pieces and cases match that reputation.

Unlike the sleeves in the other categories we tested, the has a rigid clamshell design that zips along three of its four edges and can withstand more abuse than a padding-only design. The Gauntlet 3.0’s stiff sides offer about as much protection as you can get in a sleeve, and its water-resistant zipper helps keep liquids out. We filled the Gauntlet 3.0 with paper towels and then sprayed it with a kitchen-sink sprayer for 30 seconds to test its water resistance, and we found that only a little water soaked through. (It wasn’t the zipper that let the water in; it was the hinge.) The inside was only a bit damp, and only near the hinge, and the Gauntlet 3.0 let in less water than any other water-resistant case we tested aside from the original Gauntlet. We wouldn’t toss a Gauntlet-clad laptop into a lake, but some light rain and snow should be no danger to a computer encased in one of these. The Gauntlet 3.0 should also protect a computer from small falls or drops much better than a neoprene sleeve could, though we wouldn’t trust it to keep a laptop pristine after a tumble of more than a few feet—after all, it’s not certified to any shock-resistance standards. The Gauntlet 3.0 is an update of an older version, which was our previous protective pick.

That model had an elastic strap inside for holding the laptop in place—a feature we prefer—but it’s no longer available. The has a similar adjustable strap, but it doesn’t hold as tightly as the original Gauntlet’s, so in our tests we could feel our computer sliding around inside that case. The overall fit of the Gauntlet 3.0 is better than that of the Sculpted Sleeve, despite the new Gauntlet’s lack of a strap. Sizes 13-inch, 15-inch Flaws but not dealbreakers The Gauntlet 3.0 is considerably larger than a basic neoprene sleeve, so you really have to want the protection to justify getting it. Measuring 1.4 inches thick and weighing almost a pound, it’s almost twice as heavy as our AmazonBasics sleeve pick. The weight is spread out pretty evenly, so it’s not dense and it doesn’t necessarily feel heavy, but your back may notice the heft after a day of carrying this Thule sleeve around in a backpack.

Those are the kind of sacrifices you have to make for this level of protection. The Gauntlet 3.0 is available in only 13-inch and 15-inch variations, so if your machine is larger or smaller, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Twelve South has long been known for its Mac-only accessory collection. The is one of the stars of the lineup, made of real leather and designed to look like a classic book, complete with a textured spine and gold lettering. This design is great if you want your laptop to look like a vintage, hardcover book; it’s not so great if you don’t. Inside the BookBook, elastic straps hold the top corners of the computer’s screen in place; the case is designed to open with your laptop and stay on while you’re typing.

Although Twelve South says it’s only for the MacBook Pro, we found that our Chromebook Pixel fit fine, but we can’t be certain about other computers. This case has a unique aesthetic, but in our experience, if you love it, you really love it. Be prepared to get plenty of questions and comments. Photo: Michael Hession The design is simple: two panels of sturdy leather, cleanly stitched together and lined with wool. We appreciate how thick the walls are, at about 3/16 of an inch. That’s enough to offer some bump protection, and certainly more protective than most leather sleeves we’ve tested—this case is about the same thickness as a neoprene sleeve with the computer in place, but the material is sturdier.

The Classic Sleeve is made specifically for the MacBook you buy it for (and only for MacBooks, not PCs), and breaking it in takes some time. The biggest drawback is the open top edge; we’d much prefer some sort of flap or other enclosure along the top.

But considering the price you can pay for high-end sleeves and cases, it’s an omission we’re willing to overlook for anyone who loves the design. Who it’s for Sometimes you need to carry more than just your laptop, but you don’t want to haul around a full-size backpack or purse. In those instances, it’s nice to have a laptop case that includes at least a pocket or two for your charger and some accessories, plus a strap to throw over your shoulder or handles to grab onto. Why it’s great combines a great laptop sleeve with just enough storage to be useful for daily use without weighing you down. The nylon bag is well-padded all the way around, helping to better absorb shocks and drops, and offers extra support in the two bottom corners for even more protection. It opens along one of the short vertical edges rather than the top, and soft faux fur lines the interior of the laptop compartment. The Tomtoc bag’s pockets have more space for carrying accessories than most sleeves.

Photo: Michael Hession The front of the Tomtoc bag features two pockets. Both are about 8 inches tall; the one on the left is 7 inches across, and the one on the right is about 5 inches across. Inside each are organizational dividers, which provides plenty of space to hold a MacBook charger, pens, a Field Notes-size notebook, and keys, with room to spare. The 1½-inch-wide shoulder strap has a padded segment, making it far more comfortable than cases with a thinner, non-padded strap. The leatherlike handle is another option if you prefer to carry the bag by hand. If you like the style of this bag, but need more room, the similar 360° lets you carry even more. The interior divider allows you to store your laptop plus an ebook reader or notebook.

The front features a pair of pockets; one is about half the width of the bag and closes magnetically, allowing for quick access; the other zips open across the bag’s face and has organizers inside. Like on the more basic sleeve, we like the identical, high-quality shoulder strap. This model has handles that tuck away when not in use, and a strap for fitting the laptop holder onto your luggage. Sizes 11-inch, 13-inch, 14-inch, 15-inch Flaws but not dealbreakers Because there’s only one large pocket, you won’t be able to fit a tablet or other larger accessory without it taking space from your laptop, and the two could rub against each other. If you do need to fit two larger devices in one bag, go with the.
